What Uber Eats does with AI
In July 2025 Uber announced new AI tools for restaurants, reported by TechCrunch: AI that improves low quality food photos, AI menu descriptions you can approve, and AI summaries of reviews. Uber also pays customers in some countries a small credit when their photo of a dish is chosen and published.
Customer photos on dishes without a picture
If an item has no photo from you, Uber can show a photo from a verified recent customer, after checking it against its guidelines. That photo may be taken in poor light or show the dish after the trip. To control what people see, upload your own photo of every popular dish in Menu Maker.
Why photos of your real food still win
- Customers get what they saw. When the dish that arrives matches the photo, there are fewer "not as pictured" complaints, refunds and low ratings.
- The rules point the same way. Uber's photo guidance asks for a true representation of the dish, and DoorDash's rules for virtual brands ban images that are evidently made by AI.
- People notice. In 2026 several restaurants faced public anger online for AI food pictures. Real photos build trust.
Uber's own goal: 70% of your dishes
In April 2026 Uber Eats said customers are more likely to order when at least 70% of a menu's items have a photo and a description, and that stores which reached it in their first week sold more on average (Uber Eats, Get discovered; Uber notes results may vary). Count your own menu: how many dishes have both?
How to get there with your own photos
- Shoot your ten best sellers first, in daylight, on a plain plate. Our guide to food photos on your phone shows how.
- Check Uber's sizes in our photo requirements guide.
- Add a one line description to every dish with a photo.
